How to add Drivers to Windows Installation ISO – Windows 10 & 11<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I recently had a customer, who had bought a new laptop. but the newest Windows 11 image could not recognize any network adapter, so we could not sign in with the Microsoft Account.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Here is a guide, how to add the missing driver(s) during the setup, to the Windows Installation ISO.<\/h4>\n

In this example i have a brand new Lenovo L15 (20U3004GFR). As seen in the image below, the Windows 11 21H2 Image only recognize the Lan adapter. Let’s make a new image that recognizes the Wi-Fi adapter too.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Prerequisites<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Driver(s)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Download required drivers from manufacturer’s site<\/p>\n

Windows Assessment and Deployment kit<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can download it from this link;\u00a0Download Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Microsoft.com)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Windows 10 or 11 ISO file<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can download the latest Windows 11 at this link from Microsoft; Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Disk space<\/strong><\/p>\n

15GB free disk space (after download of the ISO file)<\/p>\n

Bootable USB creater tool<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can use Rufus, a free tool Rufus – Create bootable USB drives the easy way<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Driver(s)<\/h2>\n

Create an folder on your C-Drive called Driver<\/strong> (C:\\driver)<\/strong> and export the driver\/drivers you wan’t to add to the image, to this folder.<\/p>\n

Windows ISO file<\/h2>\n

Create an folder on your C-Drive called work (C:\\work)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Create an folder on your C-Drive called iso (C:\\iso)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mount the ISO file in Windows (double click on the file, or right click and choose Mount)<\/p>\n

Open the mounted ISO from explore, then select all files (Ctrl+A<\/strong>) and Copy it (Ctrl+C<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Open the iso folder (C:\\iso<\/strong>) and paste the files to this folder (Ctrl+V<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Mount the Windows ISO<\/p>\n

Open elevated PowerShell,<\/strong> (Search for PowerShell in your start menu, and right click and choose Run as administrator)<\/p>\n

Type:<\/p>\n

for Windows 11:<\/p>\n

Dism \/Get-WimInfo \/WimFile:C:\\iso<\/span>\\Sources\\install.wim<\/strong><\/pre>\n
for Windows 10:<\/p>\n
Dism \/Get-WimInfo \/WimFile:C:\\iso<\/span>\\Sources\\install.esd<\/pre>\n
Now we have to find the index number of the OS edition. In this example we have a Wndows 11 (21H2)<\/strong> ISO, I will use PRO edition<\/strong> to add drivers to, so let’s go for the index number 6<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now we have to mount the image of your preferred Windows edition (in this example<\/span><\/span> Windows 11 Pro) using it’s index number<\/p>\n
Type:<\/p>\n
Dism \/Mount-Image \/ImageFile:C:\\iso<\/span>\\Sources\\install.wim \/Index:6<\/span> \/MountDir:C:\\work<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n
Wait for the Deployment Image Servicing and Managment tool to complete<\/p>\n

Add driver(s) to the image<\/h2>\n
Open the Driver folder (C:\\driver<\/strong>) if you not already<\/span><\/span> have enabled file extensions<\/span><\/span> in explore, then do it<\/p>\n

Find the .inf file<\/strong>(s) of your driver(s) in this example let’s take mtkwl6ex.inf <\/strong>(MediaTek Wi-Fi 6\/6E Wireless LAN Card driver)<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
Type:<\/p>\n
dism \/Image:C:\\work <\/span>\/Add-Driver \/Driver:C:\\Driver<\/span>\\mtkwl6ex.inf\r\n<\/span>\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n
If the driver is unsigned, use the following command insted : dism \/Image:C:\\work<\/span> \/Add-Driver \/Driver:C:\\Driver<\/span>\\mtkwl6ex.inf<\/span> \/ForceUnsigned\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
if you want to add additional drivers, repeat previous step and change the Driver,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Or you can use this command for adding all the drivers in the folder and subfolders: dism \/Image:C:\\work<\/span> \/Add-Driver \/Driver:C:\\Driver<\/span> \/Recurse<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
When all drivers are added, we have to commit the changes to the Windows image type;<\/p>\n
dism \/Unmount-Image \/MountDir:C:\\work<\/span> \/Commit<\/strong><\/pre>\n

Windows Deployment Tools<\/h2>\n
We now need the Deployment tool, so go on and install it<\/p>\n
Run the Install file for the Windows Deployment Tools (link in the top)<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong><\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
Click Next<\/strong><\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
Click Accept<\/strong><\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
We only need the Deployment Tool<\/strong>, so remove the other checkmarks, and click Install<\/strong><\/p>\n
Click Yes<\/strong> to the UAC box<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
Click Close<\/strong><\/p>\n
Open the Deployment and Imaging tool Enciroment<\/strong> as Administrator from your start menu<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
Click Yes<\/strong> to the UAC Box<\/p>\n
Now we have to create the new ISO file<\/p>\n
Type this command;<\/p>\n
oscdimg.exe -m -o -u2 -udfver102 -bootdata:2#p0,e,bc<\/span>:\\iso<\/span>\\boot\\etfsboot.com#pEF,e,bc<\/span>:\\iso<\/span>\\efi\\microsoft\\boot\\efisys.bin\u00a0c:\\iso<\/span> <\/strong>c<\/strong>:\\Win.iso\r\n\r\n<\/b><\/span><\/pre>\n

Now we have the final updated ISO file at our C-Drive called Win.iso<\/strong><\/p>\n
Optional:<\/strong> You can now delete the folders; C:\\Driver,<\/strong> C:\\iso<\/strong> & C:\\work<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Create Bootable USB Stick<\/h2>\n
Final thing we have to do, is to write the iso file to an usb stick<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
In this guide I use the free tool Rufus<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Open Rufus<\/p>\n

Choose you USB drive<\/strong> in the top drop down menu<\/p>\n
Choose our new Iso file at the Select<\/strong> box<\/p>\n

Click START<\/strong><\/p>\n

Click OK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now the Bootable USB Stick is Ready<\/strong><\/h4>\n
